From conception and construction, through to the day-to-day operations, the Hamilton Island Golf Club is strongly committed to preserving the pristine environment of the world’s largest protected marine area - the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Hamilton Island Enterprises Limited, of which the Golf Club is a part, participates in the Eye On The Reef program; a collaboration of 40 marine tourism operators who report and collect data on the health of the Great Barrier Reef.
Due to the fragile ecosystem surrounding the Hamilton Island Golf Club, the importation of building materials and specific logistical challenges demanded careful preparation and planning, and sophisticated construction and erection techniques. Innovative building design, guidelines and regulations ensure that the impact on the environment is minimised.
For example:
- The placement of each hole was painstakingly considered to ensure that both the man-made and natural environment blended harmoniously.
- The natural slopes have been maintained to minimise soil disturbance, and any silt that does run off is captured and contained to prevent it from entering the water.
- The gardens have been carefully designed using predominantly indigenous species, with garden waste being mulched and recycled to ensure water use is kept to a minimum.
- Rather than relying solely on air-conditioning, the Clubhouse makes extensive use of natural light and ceiling fans to maximise the ample sun and cooling effects of the Island’s breezes.
Our adherence to strict environmental management policies ensures that our commitment to preserving the natural ecosystem is not only maintained but constantly improved upon, both on a day-to-day basis and over the long term.
Such policies include:
- Hamilton Island Golf Club makes available electric buggies for transportation to minimise emissions.
- Where possible we use only organic and/or natural products.
- We request that guests do not feed the wildlife to maintain the delicate balance of the Island’s natural inhabitants.
- Hamilton Island Golf Club utilises state of the art sewage treatment facilities, which enables 90% of treated effluent to be re-used for irrigating parks and gardens, ensuring that the environment and surrounded reefs are protected.
